Scotch the Scare-go is lonely scarecrow, whose life takes a brighter turn when a messenger rabbit brings news that he’s been chosen to be a Scare-go. As the rabbit explains, this means that rather than chasing crows away, his job is to help scared children. Scotch the Scare-go is accompanied by a very special extra - a real piece of tartan kilt is tucked into a page near the end, a soft fragment of fabric that will “make the scare go away”.

In the second Scotch the Scare-go book, we learn more about Scotch’s sidekick - a friendly rabbit called Hop. Together with Hop, Scotch helps a young boy who is nervous about starting school, a situation that will be familiar to everyone. This second instalment features more beautiful illustrations by Dave Clark, as well as the familiar real piece of tartan kilt to help children learn how to banish their fears. The perfect accompaniment to Scotch the Scare-Go.

In the third adventure, there are two Scotch the Scare-go stories. Firstly he helps children in hospital overcome their fears by teaching them a lovely rhyme. Then secondly helps a group of friends who get cut off by the tide on the rocks on the beach. Parents with children who might be reluctant to learn to swim will be helped by this story and of course, there is the familiar piece of tartan included as a keep-sake.

As adults, we often forget how easily our children can become scared and anxious.

What we think of as straightforward, everyday circumstances in life can sometimes present a challenge to our children – one that they can be scared of. It could be their first school sports day, a visit to the dentist, or something as simple as riding a bike for the first time.

For the sake of their development, it’s important that children overcome their fears and face their challenges with confidence, and that’s where Scotch (and his sidekick rabbit Hop) comes in.

Scotch is a friendly scarecrow who magically appears when a child is scared and shows the child how to overcome their fears. Importantly, he is not a ‘superhero’ who fixes a problem, or gets the child out of a scrape, but rather more like a guardian angel who empowers the child to find their own solution and overcome their fear.

Reviews from happy parents

“Lovely story. Read it with my daughter who insisted on summarising the plot for me and re-reading it a few times. Great illustrations and very easy to follow.”

“My son gave me a cuddle after reading it. This is unusual for him.”

“A charming story with inspirational added tartan comforter.”

“The story was great and warm and the illustrations/whole look and feel of the book was brilliant.”

“Being scared is something that every child experiences growing up. This book is a fab way of banishing the fear and help children to handle their fears. There is also a nice little treat for your little ones to take away at the end of the book. This means for me that the book never stops helping, even when you shut the pages. ❤️”

About the author

Neil Dickinson spent his career writing scientific articles for doctors and healthcare professionals. He was asked to write a short children’s picture book to help parents of children with rare diseases, who were faced with giving home injections to their children. The book's success gave him a taste for writing children’s stories, and Scotch the Scare-go was his first character creation. Sales of Scotch the Scare-go have soared during lockdowns and school closures. The book has helped countless anxious children (and parents!) with a comforting bed-time story in these challenging times.
